COACHING & SUPERVISION

I augment my private practice in individual and couple therapy with a range of other services built on psychotherapeutic and coaching skills.

I offer Business Solutions, see below, and Performance Anxiety Coaching as a specialisation, to actors, speakers and musicians either individually or in groups.

I am also an experienced supervisor. If you are training and need a BACP accredited supervisor you will need to find someone else.

For colleagues, I have twenty years' experience and am willing to offer the Super-Vision, case discussion, emotional support and educational component which comprise the main elements of the supervisory relationship.

Due to widespread financial pressure on colleagues in a profession which is challenging to market, I am currently offering 50 minutes supervision for only £30.

Five Simple Questions EMPLOYERS can answer in just fifty seconds:

4) Do you think someone at your place of work is being bullied by another employee?

5) Would you like a respectful, confidential and accurate ‘health check' for your teams?

2) Are you stressed and flooded with uncomfortable feelings too often at work?

3) Are you being made to witness some bad behaviour between co-workers which affects your work?

Think HR will solve your employee problems?

I, with a supporting colleague, can offer bespoke, affordable, occupational psychological healthcare and team cohesion packages for businesses of all sizes through programmes not yet widely available outside London.

We are very experienced health care professionals but we've also been in business as employees, managers and employers ourselves.

You may have a great business, and overall, great staff. But there may be people issues in your company which are actually costing you money, maybe even impeding development. These issues may not be obvious to you but we will spot them easily. [For more depth information on the kinds of issues we tackle, see the link to Rhiannon Hill's book at the bottom of the page.]

We don’t use one-size-fits-all audit based methods to assess people.

This is because we know there are good, but complex, individual reasons why these issues arise and we have found that by treating all staff with compassion and respect we can turn around a group or team dynamic which is not working well or identify and support people who are causing problems at work.

We use an individual one on one session with each employee for five minutes each to establish the issues.

Then we provide an initial report to discuss how our group programmes can help.

What happens once we have carried out the health check?

You get a confidential report. If you then want us to act, we will arrange to run a group, or groups, in your workplace or other suitable location, at a time convenient to you.

Using tried and tested group dynamics and other techniques, we will enable all your staff to explore and improve their working relationships with one another in a safe, non judgmental environment. This will be followed with short, seminars supporting them in changing behaviours and embedding Best Practice in people and communications skills in your company.

If you are an employee and you work in an environment where there are issues like poor communication, negative power struggling, bullying, inappropriate behaviours, ‘personality clash’ and these are having an effect on you, ring us to see how we can help on 01273 731344 or 07931363779. There is no obligation.

If you are an employer and you think negative behaviours among your staff are costing you money, CALL US FOR MORE INFORMATION ON 07931 363779/01273 731344 OR 07901 812412

Recent UK information on workplace bullying

FAQs

Why not just fire people who cause trouble?

Well, you can. But not only are you just passing the problem on, it costs MONEY! Recruitment, induction and training repeatedly can be a large expensive for a Small to Medium Enterprise company.

Why not just use standard Executive Coaching?

Well, it can be excellent and has its place.

We have more in depth applications to support people in the workplace. We specialise in troubleshooting methods which do not leave people feeling that they are wrong or bad. Once these have been identified and changed, it's time for Executive Coaching.

Surely we can just train people?

Training also has its place but people will not benefit if there are underlying issues because these are often unconscious and can't be 'trained away.'

Individual or group work is very effective for tackling stress, communications, relationship and teamwork issues in all kinds of organisations.

Is it expensive?

We have a standard guideline tariff, but we always try to offer bespoke, individual or groupwork solutions to address a range of people issues in business and workplace settings.

Can I get more information before I decide whether to explore your services?

Yes, call us for a no obligation chat, or please see Rhiannon Hill's e-book: Ten Stupid Things That Can Mess Up Your Working Life - pictured above or check this website's Books and Articles pages which are updated regularly.

What is your track record?

We have worked as employees, managers and employers ourselves. Between us we have many years' experience and solid qualifications as therapists and coaches. We all have long experience of working with individual clients experiencing workplace problems but this should be addressed where it happens: in the workplace because it affects everyone. We have used group work in business and we have found it is the most cost/results-effective method of tackling staff behaviour issues.

Can we retain you to work with just certain individuals?

Yes. Our business service is already retained by local companies to provide an ad hoc service for individual employees. This is an especially cost effective form of Employee Assistance for Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) firms as we do not require a retainer. We're members of the Federation of Small Businesses ourselves so we know what some of the challenges are.

We will typically arrange a fixed period of sessions for any employee dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement, pre retirement, bullying and personal problems, illness or redundancy.

Do you provide Team Building services?

We can also set up educational, time limited group sessions either on or offsite for small companies who would like employees to tackle challenging team issues.

Please contact us for an informal chat.

In-depth Description of Service

Individual Staff Issues
One-to-one support may be the preferred option for staff who may be struggling with the work itself. Some communication and workplace relationship problems can overwhelm some people and affect performance far more than training shortfall.

This avoids absences due to sickness, and high staff turnover or churn, which creates avoidable re-recruitment and training costs.

Team Problems
Teamwork is always crucial to the success of any human endeavour but nowhere more than in your business.

A team may be formal, informal, but ‘people dynamics’ still apply. We are experts in team dynamics. We know that if all members don’t understand, or share the same goals the team won’t work.

We don’t coach or train. We show you how to explore, open and experiment. This way, everyone in the group acquires meaninful insights. As a result, understanding increases and behaviours automatically change.

Management

Managers are often recruited because they have proven professional skills. In small businesses, sometimes their people handling abilities are unclear, or simply overlooked.

Here are some examples of Best Practice people protocols:

Commitment to positive, respectful and clear verbal communication

Understanding colleagues’ human and social needs

Emotional literacy e.g trust, positive regard, understanding diversity, good self esteem and knowledge of anger and stress management techniques

Creating systems which are straightforward and workable and do not add to stress and confusion.

ARTICLE - CURRENT RESEARCH ON BULLYING

According to a 2007 poll 44 per cent of American workers feel they have worked for a supervisor or employer whom they considered abusive. The poll, by the Philadelphia-based Reed Group, surveyed 1,000 workers found:
• 55 per cent reported being yelled at by a boss or witnessed a boss yelling at a co-worker
• 50 per cent were personally insulted or witnessed a boss personally insult co-workers
• 45 per cent were demeaned or embarrassed in person or over e-mail or witnessed a co-worker being demeaned or embarrassed by a boss in person or over e-mail
• 40 per cent were the target of rumor-spreading or the sharing of confidential information or witnessed such behavior,
• 17 per cent endured or witnessed inappropriate physical contact, and
• 11 per cent were physically threatened or witnessed a physical threat made against a co-worker. According to the ELA poll, educated workers, those with some college or a college degree, are more likely to have been a victim of abuse by their presumably well-educated supervisors or employers and 47 per cent responded that they'd been the target of abuse than their less-educated counterparts 34 per cent.

Research also shows that employees are not the only ones who suffer at the hands of a bullying boss ‚ companies get hurt, too. High turnover, excessive absenteeism, low productivity and the increased cost of health care for stress-related disorders or ailments in affected employees can eat away at a company's bottom line.

A broad description of the main kinds of behaviours which constitute bullying:

Persistent unwelcome behaviour
unwarranted or invalid criticism
nit-picking and overly fault-finding
exclusion
isolation
being singled out or treated differently
being shouted at
humiliated
excessive monitoring
unfounded verbal and written warnings

Model legislation proposed in some US states suggests this definition:

Abusive conduct may include repeated infliction of verbal abuse, derogatory remarks, insults, and negative nicknames, verbal or physical conduct a reasonable person would find threatening, intimidating, or humiliating or gratuitous sabotage or undermining of work performance.

On April 26, 2007, EU social partnership organizations signed a framework agreement on workplace violence and harassment. It contains procedures for investigation and management of complaints, setting a target date for compliance by April 2010. In the UK, a Code of Conduct will probably be introduced among future government guidelines to employers.
